What is the ruling on extending one's legs in the mosque, along with all the relevant references?

It is permissible for a Muslim to extend their legs in the mosque, as long as it is not considered a breach of decorum or a lack of respect towards those present. It is disliked to extend one's legs towards the Qibla, out of reverence for the House of Allah and the direction of worship. This is the view of the Hanbalis and Hanafis. Some Shafi'is hold the view that extending one's legs towards a Mus'haf (copy of the Qur'an) is forbidden.
