What is the meaning of jealousy, and how does it affect our lives?

The prophetic traditions agree on affirming the attribute of jealousy (ghirah) for Allah Almighty. This is a jealousy that does not resemble the jealousy of creatures and is befitting His Majesty, and it manifested in His prohibition of indecencies. Jealousy is a praiseworthy characteristic in humans; it is a mixture of courage and justice. It is commendable when there is doubt, and blameworthy if based on ill-thought. Moderate jealousy is the basis of a sound life, and being jealous for Allah's prohibitions is a quality of faith, while sins weaken jealousy. Jealousy is the root of religion and protects the heart and limbs from evil. Moderation and wisdom are necessary in jealousy, for both men and women, to avoid ill-thought and poor companionship.
