What is the ruling on a teacher accepting hospitality, such as sweets or cakes, from a student, and does this differ from material gifts in that it is consumable and does not influence one's inclination?

It is not permissible to offer gifts to male or female teachers in official schools, whether governmental or private, because such an act falls under the meaning of bribery, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade gifts to workers. The school is not permitted to accept a gift from a student for fear that it might lead to injustice and an increase in the teacher's affection for that particular student. Therefore, the teacher must refuse the gift. As for a small item, such as a piece of chocolate, which is customarily tolerated and not considered a bribe, there should be no strictness regarding it, unlike something of value, such as a box of chocolates, which is not permissible to accept.

Abstinence in this matter is more befitting for a Muslim.
