Is it forbidden to defend myself against someone who is hitting me?

Self-defense is permissible for a Muslim if someone intends to assault him with a beating or otherwise, whether the assault is upon himself, his family, his honor, or his property. Self-defense is consistent with the dignity of a Muslim, and it has been narrated in the Hadith: "It is not fitting for a believer to humiliate himself."
