What is the ruling on the congregant asking the Imam to hasten the prayer, such as by telling him to recite from the short surahs?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the Imam unduly prolongs the prayer to an excessive extent that harms the congregants and causes them hardship, it is permissible to ask him to lighten it, because his action in this regard goes against the Sunnah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded Mu'adh to lighten the prayer when leading people, and to consider the condition of the weak, the sick, and the elderly. However, if the Imam performs the prayer as prescribed without harming the congregants, and observes the Sunnah in his prayer, then requesting further lightening beyond that goes against the Sunnah, and it is obligatory upon the congregants in this situation not to find the prayer burdensome.
