What is the Sharia ruling on expelling one's brother's wife from the home and reporting her to the police due to her harmful and abusive actions?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

You do not have the right to expel your brother's wife from his house, for she has the right to reside therein. However, you may prevent her from entering your house or using your belongings. It is permissible to report to the police the insults and harm she has inflicted. It is preferable to advise her kindly, or to inform her husband so that he may prevent her from causing harm, or relocate her to a dwelling far from your house. Responding to evil with good brings affection, and forgiveness is one of the best deeds that Allah loves, elevating its doer and increasing his honor and dignity. It is also a cause for Allah's forgiveness.
