What is the ruling on working in Sweden while paying taxes, and is paying taxes considered unlawful if they are used against Islam?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

We have previously answered that residing in the lands of disbelievers is not permissible except out of necessity, for the purpose of da'wah (inviting to Islam), or for a legitimate شرعية (Shar'i) interest. As for taxes, if they are obligatory or if the resident has agreed to them, he is obliged to pay them in fulfillment of his commitment and to avoid humiliation and disgrace. The disbelievers' use of taxes is often for the service of their society and its facilities, and the resident benefits from these services.
