Is it permissible to work in the field of sales tax, and will a person be held accountable for working in a place that has a degree of doubt, and is it permissible to continue working there until an alternative is found if it is unlawful?
Taxes are of two types: permissible and forbidden. Permissible taxes: These are taxes imposed by the state to provide essential services to citizens, such as building roads and hospitals, provided that the public treasury is depleted and there is no mismanagement or misuse of public funds. Forbidden taxes: These are taxes imposed by the state without any مقابل (compensation or service in return), or if the state's resources are sufficient to provide the necessary services. This is forbidden in Sharia, and the one who collects them will not enter Paradise, according to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "The collector of makūs (taxes, imposts) will not enter Paradise." Makūs are taxes and similar levies taken without a rightful Sharia basis.
Working in tax administrations: 1. It is permissible to work if the tax authority adheres to Sharia, does not overburden people, spends funds on the welfare of Muslims, and if the public treasury is empty or deficient, and there is no mismanagement of public funds. The worker must be just and avoid oppression and bribery. 2. It is not permissible to work if the state imposes taxes without muqābil (compensation/service in return), or if the work is subject to laws that contradict Sharia, based on the Almighty's saying: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." If it becomes clear that working in sales tax is forbidden, it is not permissible to remain in it; rather, one must leave it.
