Is it permissible to eat sweets decorated with natural, edible, and inexpensive gold?

If the gold ornamentation is very slight and vanishes by fire, then there is no objection to consuming it, similar to eating from utensils gilded with this amount of gold.

However, if the gold ornamentation is noticeable and some of it remains after exposure to fire, then it is impermissible to consume the dessert, because gilded, plated, or inlaid gold takes the same ruling as gold itself.

The prohibition of eating desserts ornamented with gold is more paramount than the prohibition of eating and drinking from gold vessels, due to the presence of the same underlying cause for the prohibition, whether it be extravagance and pride or breaking the hearts of the poor. The majority of scholars have extended the prohibition of eating and drinking to include all forms of use, except for what the Sharī‘ah has specifically exempted or what is out of necessity.

If the gold ornamentation transforms into another substance through processing, then there is no objection to consuming desserts ornamented with it, as long as harm and extravagance are absent, for the general rule concerning foods is permissibility.
