What are the proofs of the jurists (Hanafis, Hanbalis, and Shafi'is) regarding their disagreement on the issue of a mature woman's guardianship (wilayah) in matters other than marriage, and does this guardianship continue or terminate upon her reaching maturity?

The jurists agree that a father's guardianship over his virgin daughter differs according to the various madhhabs (schools of thought).

The Hanafis hold that a father has the right to keep his young virgin daughter with him, fearing for her corruption, but he does not have this right once she reaches puberty and becomes mature.

The Malikis and Hanbalis believe that a father's guardianship over an adult virgin does not cease except upon marriage and the husband's consummation, due to her need for protection and care.

As for the Shafi'is, their relied-upon position is that a father's guardianship over his daughter ends upon her reaching puberty.

An ordinary person should follow whichever scholar he trusts when the opinions of scholars differ.
