If the two parties to a sale agree to share the shipping cost equally, their agreement should be honored, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Muslims are bound by their conditions." As for the return cost, it is borne by the buyer, because he is the one who initiated the return request. Jurists are of the opinion that the cost of returning an item due to a defect is on the buyer, unless otherwise agreed upon.
