What is the ruling on playing computer games, and is the money earned from renting out computers for gaming permissible?

Islam has permitted recreation and leisure, provided that certain controls are observed: that it does not distract from an obligation, nor consume a long time, nor be accompanied by any forbidden act; and that the recreation be something beneficial, such as mental or physical exercise, or gaining useful experiences. If games meet these criteria, then they are permissible, and the money earned from them is lawful. The proof of permissibility is what is authentically reported in the Sahihayn that the Abyssinians were playing with their spears in the mosque in the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to 'Umar: "(Leave them, O 'Umar)."
