The belief held by some that one who abandons prayer is among the awliya' (saints/friends of God) is a deviation that contradicts the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. Verily, the wali is the pious believer. One who abandons prayer is considered a fasiq (transgressor), and the preponderant opinion is that he is a disbeliever. As for what some Sufis do, claiming revelation and being tasked with things other than what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, it is a superstition and falsehood, for the religion has been perfected.
