Is a wife sinful if she fulfills only her obligatory duties towards her husband, and does not go above and beyond to make him happy in ways that exceed his verbal requests and household chores, and is she sinful if the husband becomes angry as a result?

You are not sinful if you serve your husband and obey him in what he commands you. He has no right to be angry because you did not discern his requests before he articulated them, for a wife is commanded to obey her husband if he commands her. It is advisable to avoid angering him and to be keen on doing what pleases him—even if he does not verbally command it—because pleasing one's husband is among the greatest ways a woman can draw closer to Allah.
