What is the ruling on women messaging a chat website for men and women, where administrators and participants exchange phrases such as "your sincere lover" and pictures of roses and hearts, or the phrase "your brother who loves you," or "From my torment, I said to your eyes, 'Welcome'... Welcome, my torment, welcome," and what are the legitimate Islamic controls for conversation between the sexes on such websites and others?

It is not befitting for a Muslim to waste time and money on internet chats. It is more fitting to utilize them in reading beneficial knowledge or memorizing the Quran and Sunnah. It is not permissible for the administrators of these websites to use foolish phrases or flirt with women, nor is it permissible for there to be a relationship between a man and a strange woman except within the framework of a legitimate marriage, or when necessary, while adhering to Islamic manners and ethics. Allah Almighty also warned against speaking in a soft or alluring manner to non-mahrams (Al-Ahzab: 32, 53). Great harm can result from men obtaining information about girls, so everyone, especially women, is advised not to participate in these websites.
