Does memorizing the Quran for worldly competition diminish sincerity or count as showing off?

A Muslim should treat the whispers of Satan by completely ignoring them, diverting the mind from the matter, and occupying oneself with what is beneficial, such as learning and memorizing the Quran. As long as the goal of this is to strengthen one's resolve for good, then it is not considered showing off (riya').
