How authentic is the story of Abu Qudamah Al-Shami and the boy, and does the character of Abu Qudamah Al-Shami actually exist?

Ibn al-Jawzi and others mentioned the story of Abu Qudamah al-Shami without an unbroken chain of narration (isnad), and its widespread nature does not necessarily confirm or deny its authenticity. Stories of this kind are not used to derive religious rulings, but rather are mentioned to inspire determination and provide admonition, with the caveat that their authenticity cannot be definitively asserted, and they should be recounted using a weak or uncertain form of narration. No well-known historical figure named Abu Qudamah al-Shami has been found outside of this particular story.
