What is the ruling on one who greets with the words, "Peace be upon the Muslims"?

The Sunnah regarding greetings is for a Muslim to say: "Peace be upon you (Assalamu Alaykum)." It has been narrated in a hadith that this was the greeting of Adam and his progeny. Saying: "Peace be upon the Muslims (Assalamu Alal-Muslimeen)" goes against the guidance and Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and should be avoided, especially if it contains any insinuation or taunt.
