A man contracted marriage with a woman and died before consummating it with her?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A woman whose husband dies before consummating the marriage must observe an 'iddah (waiting period) of four months and ten days. This is based on the Almighty's saying: (And those of you who die and leave wives behind them, they (their wives) shall wait (as regards their marriage) for four months and ten days), and the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person for more than three (days), except for a husband, (for whom she mourves) four months and ten (days)." A woman, immediately upon the marriage contract, is considered a wife, and thus is entitled to the full dowry, inherits, and observes the 'iddah of death.
