How can one deal with persistent intrusive thoughts regarding creed, feelings of relapse, breaking covenants, committing sins, doubts about faith, and the fear of falling into disbelief, especially after experiencing actions such as masturbation and placing the hand on the face to ward off envy, knowing their impermissibility? Is a person held accountable for cursing religion to oneself as a fleeting thought without persistence? How can one distinguish between persistent and non-persistent self-talk? Does Allah forgive the person afflicted with intrusive thoughts for not uttering the two declarations of faith and repenting from a specific act of disbelief? What is the way to begin overcoming this state?

To overcome misgivings (waswas), seek Allah's help, turn away from them, and ignore them. You are not held accountable for negative thoughts about religion or feelings of boredom that you find within yourself, as this does not necessitate repentance or renewing your Shahada (testimony of faith) as long as you dislike them; rather, it is a sign of faith. Know that the fear of disbelief (kufr) and hypocrisy (nifaq) is a sign of faith. You are not held accountable for actions committed forgetfully, such as putting fingers in the mouth, for Allah says: "And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred, but [only for] what your hearts intended." [Quran 33:5]. Remember Allah's forgiveness and mercy, and strive to continue abandoning bad habits.
