Is it permissible to withdraw from the intention of building a mosque due to there being no need for it, the abundance of mosques, and the scarcity of worshippers?

There is no harm in the father retracting his intention to build a mosque in a place where there are already sufficient mosques. It is, however, preferable for him to build a mosque in another place where there is a need for it, so that he may attain the reward and merit of building mosques. Allah the Almighty says: "The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided." (Quran 9:18). Building a mosque is considered an ongoing charity that benefits its builder after his death. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, among the good deeds and merits that will reach a believer after his death are: knowledge he taught and disseminated, a righteous child he left behind, a Qur'an he bequeathed, or a mosque he built."
