Why does obsessive doubt not afflict the worldly, but rather the devout?
"Whispers of Satan" (Waswasa) do not dominate the scholar because he knows they are from the plots of Satan, that they contradict the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the conduct of his Companions, and that they go against the ease of Islamic law. On the other hand, Satan dominates the ignorant worshipper due to his lack of knowledge. The jurist Ibn Hajar al-Makki explained that forgiveness in knowledge removes waswasa, and that waswasa is a sign of ignorance. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not experience waswasa due to their knowledge, and if it were a virtue, Allah would not have withheld it from them. A Muslim must avoid waswas and cling to beneficial knowledge to repel them.
