The question

Regarding my mother, during her menopausal period, she experiences almost constant bleeding due to a benign tumor. Is this blood considered menstrual blood, which would necessitate her breaking her fast, or is it istihadah (non-menstrual) bleeding, which would not necessitate her breaking her fast?

The answer

If the blood flow continues for a day and a night or more, then it is menstruation (hayd), and she must refrain from fasting and prayer, and make up for the days of fasting. This is unless it is due to an illness, in which case it would be irregular bleeding (). However, if it stops before a day and a night, then it is not menstruation according to the majority of scholars.
