It is not permissible to open an account in interest-based institutions except under two conditions: the absence of an Islamic financial institution, and the fear of one's money being lost. Whoever opens an account without these two conditions must close it. Zakat is obligatory on money if it reaches the nisab and a full lunar year has passed over it. The nisab is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, and 2.5% of it must be given as Zakat. There are Islamic financial institutions and permissible transactions that suffice, making it unnecessary to deal with interest-based institutions.
