Did the Prophet and his Companions use anything to leaven their bread, knowing that yeast is a byproduct of alcohol production?

Scholars and jurists have permitted the use of yeast in bread because it is not intoxicating, and the yeast undergoes a transformation within it, leaving no trace. Yeast does not intoxicate if a person consumes it. Furthermore, the Companions' use of yeast is well-established.
