Does Islam call for loving those who do ill and seeking mercy and forgiveness for them?

Islam is a religion of love and tolerance. If a Muslim is wronged, it is permissible for him to retaliate in kind, but it is better to forgive, pardon, and show clemency, for Allah Almighty says: "The recompense for an evil is an evil of the like thereof. But whoever pardons and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah." Forgiving the oppressor is not a humiliation; rather, it is an elevation of one's status with Allah and people, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah increases not a servant in anything but honor by his forgiveness, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status."
