Is it permissible to study English literature and delve deeply into it?

If the purpose of studying English literature is to achieve a legitimate benefit, such as critiquing it and exposing its destructive ideas, then there is no harm in it. However, if there is no legitimate benefit, then studying it is disliked (makrooh) due to wasting time, and it is not necessary for learning the language. The dislike escalates to prohibition if the student is not safe from being influenced by its ideas, as a preventative measure.
