Is it permissible for someone who possesses sufficient [means] to request Zakat funds to furnish his home, and what are the consequences if he does so?

If the recipient is poor and eligible for zakat, then it is permissible for him to take it to buy household furniture or other basic necessities. However, if he has enough to buy furniture and cover expenses, then it is not permissible for him to take zakat.

If it becomes clear that he was not eligible for zakat after taking it, he must return the amount he took to the entity that paid it. If the zakat is damaged while in the possession of the ineligible recipient, then he is liable for it and must compensate with its equivalent or its value.
