What is the difference between Maysir and Riba?
Gambling (Al-Maysir) refers to all its forms, and usury (riba) is a conditional increase that the creditor takes from the debtor in exchange for deferment, or the selling of money or food of the same kind with an increase or deferment. Both are among the forbidden financial exchange contracts because they involve devouring people's wealth unjustly. There is no disagreement among scholars regarding their prohibition. The prohibition of usury is more severe than the prohibition of gambling, because the usurer takes a guaranteed surplus from someone in need, which is a definite injustice involving the rich dominating the poor. This is unlike gambling, where the poor might take from the rich, or where the two gamblers might be equal.
