The majority of scholars permit taking a small amount of money and benefiting from it. However, if it is something of value that its owner would seek, it must be announced publicly for a full year. If its owner comes, it is handed over to him. Otherwise, one is permitted to dispose of it. If its owner comes after it has been disposed of, it is handed over to him if it is still present, or something similar if it is a fungible item, or its value if it is a non-fungible item.
