What is the ruling on selling cigarettes and working in a place that sells them if it is difficult to find another job?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible to work in establishments whose primary activity is lawful, even if something unlawful is displayed within them, provided that the worker does not directly engage in the unlawful act and his work does not involve assisting in it. If the questioner does not directly sell cigarettes, then it is permissible for him to work in the shop; otherwise, it is not. However, if the worker is in dire need of work, cannot find any other permissible work, and is unable to refrain from selling cigarettes, then we hope there is no blame upon him for this work until another permissible path becomes available to him.
