What is the ruling on arguing with an irritable husband, and what is the ruling on his prioritizing the treatment of his family over the treatment of his wife, under the pretext that he has authority over her?
It is obligatory for both spouses to treat each other kindly and to uphold the best manners, based on the Almighty's saying: "And live with them in kindness," and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The most complete in faith among believers is the best in character, and the best of you are those who are best to their wives."
The husband should not treat his wife poorly or prefer anyone over her. When the wife is angry, it is advised to remain silent and not reciprocate, as that would worsen the situation. Instead, one should wait until she calms down, then advise her in a calm atmosphere.
The wife should be to her husband "a servant, and he will be her slave." Do not draw too close to him, lest he dominate, nor distance yourself from him, lest you burden him. The husband is advised to avoid anger and to be gentle, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not get angry," and "Gentleness is not in anything but that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything but that it disgraces it."
