What is the imam's intention when leading people in prayer so as not to fall into showing off or seeking praise from people?

The imamate is an honorable position; therefore, the imam should be keen on establishing the prayer properly and follow the example of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in lightening the burden on the worshipers without compromising the prayer. He should bear in mind the benefit to himself and the Muslims by establishing the ritual of congregational prayer, and intend to emulate the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in leading the prayer as the most learned (aqra'). It is incumbent upon him to purify his intention for Allah Almighty and be mindful of His greatness, and to know that the praise or blame of people neither harms nor benefits, but rather Allah alone is the one who harms and benefits. He should also recall the punishment for showing off. Then he should begin the prayer with his heart without verbalizing the intention, and intend thereby the reward of Allah alone.
