ما معنى الحديث والخبر في علم الحديث؟

Linguistically, "khabar" (خبر - report/news) is that which can be either true or false, and it is the opposite of "insha'" (إنشاء - declarative/constructive speech). In the terminology of the Hadith scholars (muhaddithun), it has been said that it is synonymous with "hadith." And it has been said that "hadith" is what came from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while "khabar" is what came from others. This is why one who engages with Hadith is called a "muhaddith" (Hadith scholar), and one who engages with histories and reports is called an "ikhbari" (reporter/historian). And it has been said that "hadith" is more specific than "khabar"; so every hadith is a khabar, but not every khabar is a hadith.
