What is the ruling on saying: "Praise be to Allah, I stole and they didn't catch me"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a person praises Allah for being saved from harm after committing a sin, he is not held accountable for that praise despite having committed a major sin. However, if he praises Allah for facilitating the sin and achieving his objective through it, the ruling on that is like uttering the Basmala before committing a forbidden act. It is forbidden to praise Allah for committing a forbidden act, and whoever considers that permissible has committed an act of disbelief.
