What is the Sharia evidence that the intention of prayer must coincide with the opening takbir (takbirat al-ihram)?
Scholars differ regarding the concomitance of intention () with the takbirat al- (opening takbir):
- The majority of scholars believe that the concomitance of intention with the takbirat al-ihram is not a condition, and it is permissible for the intention to precede it by a short time. - The Shafi'is stipulate the concomitance of intention with the takbirat al-ihram, citing as evidence the verse: ﴿And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, dedicating [their] religion to Him alone﴾ and the : "Actions are but by intentions." - Some scholars have permitted the intention to precede the takbirat al-ihram by a considerable time, so long as the person does not intend to invalidate the intention, and they consider this opinion to be the soundest.
