Will the fast of a wine-drinker be accepted on the days of Tasu'a and Ashura, and will his sins for the past year and the coming year be forgiven?

Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years, and fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the sins of one year. However, these two fasts only expiate minor sins. As for major sins, like drinking alcohol, they require sincere repentance. Indeed, alcohol is the mother of all evils, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed ten people concerning alcohol. Persistence in committing a major sin does not prevent one from performing acts of obedience, but the validity and acceptance of a deed is one thing, and its specific merit of expiating sins is another. Therefore, one must hasten to repent, abandon major sins, and increase in acts of obedience.
