Does the discharge of brown blood during pregnancy prevent one from praying and prohibit the husband from approaching his wife?

Scholars have differed regarding the blood of a pregnant woman, but the preponderant view is that a pregnant woman does not menstruate. Any blood she sees is considered istihadah (non-menstrual bleeding) and does not prevent prayer, fasting, or marital intimacy. The proponents of this view cite the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "A pregnant woman should not be approached until she gives birth, nor a non-pregnant woman until her purity is ascertained by one menstruation." This hadith makes pregnancy a sign of the absence of menstruation. If the bleeding or brown discharge continues, the woman should do what a woman with istihadah does: take precautions (such as wearing a pad) and perform ablution for every prayer after its time has begun.
