Is it permissible to use the kunya Abu Talib?
It is permissible to use the kunya "Abu Talib" because there is no impediment to it. This is evidenced by Al-Dhahabi mentioning examples of scholars who used this kunya in Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', including: Abu Talib al-Mufaddal ibn Salama, the linguist, the literary figure, the notable scholar; Abu Talib Zayd ibn Akhzam al-Ta'i al-Basri, the preserver of knowledge, the excellent one; and Abu Talib Ahmad ibn Nasr ibn Talib al-Baghdadi, the preserver of knowledge, the proficient one, the Imam, the muhaddith of Baghdad. And Abu Talib narrated from Ahmad ibn Hanbal the statement of Khalid al-Hadhdha': "Everything that Muhammad ibn Sirin said: 'I was informed about Ibn Abbas,' he actually narrated it from 'Ikrima."
