Ibn Khaldun held the Companions in high esteem and did not disparage them. He believed that any disagreements between them were a result of ijtihad (independent reasoning) and did not permit speaking ill of them with falsehood. Ibn Khaldun revered Mu'awiyah and considered him among the caliphs, viewing his pledge of allegiance to Yazid as being for the benefit of uniting the people.
