There is no objection to donating the umbilical cord for therapeutic purposes. The Academy of Islamic Research in Egypt has stated that there is no شرعي (-compliant) impediment to developing tissues and cells for human therapeutic use by extracting stem cells. The Academy believes that therapeutic cloning through stem cell transplantation opens a new door for treatment that can reduce reliance on organ transplantation and assist patients with incurable diseases. There is no شرعي (Sharia-compliant) impediment to establishing a bank for preserving these cells as long as they are used for human treatment.
