Is it permissible to donate the umbilical cord to save emergency cases?

There is no objection to donating the umbilical cord for therapeutic purposes. The Academy of Islamic Research in Egypt has stated that there is no شرعي (Sharia-compliant) impediment to developing tissues and cells for human therapeutic use by extracting stem cells. The Academy believes that therapeutic cloning through stem cell transplantation opens a new door for treatment that can reduce reliance on organ transplantation and assist patients with incurable diseases. There is no شرعي (Sharia-compliant) impediment to establishing a bank for preserving these cells as long as they are used for human treatment.
