Does the bridal gift for a virgin differ from that for a non-virgin?

If the father is the guardian (wali), then the dowry (mahr) is agreed upon by the father and the husband, and there is no difference between a virgin (bikr) and a non-virgin (thayyib). If the guardian is other than the father, then the dowry is determined by what the wife agrees upon with the husband. If the guardian marries her off without a dowry equal to her peers, she is entitled to a dowry of her peers (mahr al-mithl). The dowry of a virgin exceeds that of a non-virgin due to her virginity, because the dowry is the compensation for the usufruct enjoyed through intercourse, and it includes the compensation for any blemish or defect (arsh).
