How does a wine merchant repent of his great sin, and what should he do with the wealth he amassed from it?

The seller of alcohol must repent to Allah and donate the money earned from its sale to the general welfare of Muslims, based on the hadith: "Indeed, when Allah Almighty prohibits the consumption of something, He also prohibits its price." It is permissible for him to keep from it what suffices him and his dependents if he is poor, as mentioned by Al-Ghazali.
