It is desirable for the grave to be raised approximately a handspan above the ground, so that it is known to be a grave, protected, and prayers for mercy can be made for its occupant. It is not desirable to raise it more than the soil that came out of it during excavation. A handspan is the distance between the tips of the pinky and thumb when the hand is open, and it equals 23.1 centimeters.
