Is it permissible to dedicate the reward of reciting the Quran to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
Dedicating the reward of good deeds to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is an innovation (bid'ah) for the following reasons:
1. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, does not need this dedication. He receives a reward equal to that of his Ummah without any diminution of their rewards, because he is the one who guided them to the truth. 2. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not legislate this for his Ummah. "Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected." 3. The pious predecessors did not do this, and they were more knowledgeable of what is good. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Hold fast to my and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs."
Some scholars have issued fatwas stating that it is impermissible to dedicate the Quran to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, because there is no reliable narration to support it, and because the reward for recitation is already attained by him through his original legislation, and all the deeds of his Ummah are in his balance of good deeds.
