The arbitration between the armies of Ali and Mu'awiyah took place after the Battle of Siffin, where Amr ibn al-Aas proposed arbitration by the Book of Allah. Ali was represented by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, and Mu'awiyah by Amr ibn al-Aas, and they met in Dumat al-Jandal. However, the arbitration failed due to the difficulty in resolving the dispute and the insistence of both parties on their positions.
