What is the ruling regarding someone who wiped over his socks excessively and only became aware of this either during or after the prayer?

Wiping over socks is permissible by analogy with wiping over leather slippers (khuffayn). What is prescribed for it is to wipe over their top surface only, based on the hadith of Ali. What suffices for wiping is whatever falls under the definition of wiping, or most of the slipper/sock, and anything beyond that is considered superfluous and does not affect the validity of the wiping.
