The wife whose husband has passed away must observe the ' (waiting period) of death. This 'iddah begins from the time of his death if it is known. If she receives the news after the 'iddah has ended, she is considered to have exited it. However, if she does not know when he died, the 'iddah begins from the time the news of his death reaches her. Her right was to wait four years from the beginning of his absence, and then request a separation if no news of him became clear.
