What is the story of the theft committed by Joseph, which is mentioned in the verse: (They said, "If he steals, a brother of his has stolen before him." But Joseph kept it secret within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in station, and Allah is most knowing of what you describe.")?

The commentators differed on what was attributed to Yusuf (peace be upon him) regarding theft. Al-Qurtubi mentioned several opinions, including:

1. His aunt, the daughter of Isaac, loved him dearly. When Jacob wanted to take him from her, she placed Isaac's belt (which was inherited by age) under his clothes. Then she claimed it was lost so that it would be found with him and he would remain with her. Yusuf learned from this act to place the drinking cup in his brother's saddlebag. 2. He stole an idol belonging to his grandfather and broke it as a way of changing what was wrong (munkar), so his brothers accused him of theft. 3. He hid a piece of food. 4. He used to steal food from the table to give to the poor. 5. His brothers lied about what they attributed to him, and this is what Al-Zajaj and Al-Shawkani preferred.
