Does eating camel meat nullify ablution?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The correct view is that ablution (wudu') is obligatory after eating camel meat, whether the camel is young or old, male or female, cooked or raw. This is supported by authentic hadiths, such as those narrated by Jabir and Al-Bara', in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about ablution from camel meat and he replied, "Yes" and "Perform ablution from it." In contrast, regarding sheep meat, he said, "If you wish" or "No ablution is needed."

A refutation of those who do not consider ablution obligatory after eating camel meat:

1. The claim of abrogation by the hadith "The last of the two commands was to abandon ablution from what was touched by fire": This hadith is general, while the hadiths concerning ablution from camel meat are specific. The specific takes precedence over the general. Furthermore, the Prophet's saying regarding sheep meat, "If you wish," indicates that the hadiths about camel meat are not abrogated. 2. Citing the hadith "Ablution is from what exits, not from what enters": This hadith is weak. Even if it were authentic, it is general, whereas the hadiths about camel meat are specific. 3. Interpreting ablution as washing the hands and mouth: This interpretation is far-fetched, and the apparent meaning is the prescribed ritual ablution (wudu'). 4. Citing an unsubstantiated story: This story has no basis in the books of Sunnah.

The preponderant view is that ablution is obligatory after eating camel meat. This is the madhhab of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, as well as a group of Companions. It was also chosen by Al-Nawawi and a number of contemporary scholars.
